Discover Your Creative Starting Point

Discover Your Creative Starting Point

Have you ever thought about creating something but couldn't decide what it should be?
Perhaps you'd like to write, design, make something with your hands or develop a useful product. You have the enthusiasm, but no particular idea seems to stand out.
If that sounds familiar, here's something worth trying.
Instead of searching for a brilliant new idea, start by looking at the things you already know and enjoy.
Think about your hobbies and interests. Consider the skills you've developed through work, family life or everyday experience. Remember the little problems you've learned to solve, perhaps without even realising that other people might find your solutions useful.
For example, someone who enjoys cooking might create a collection of favourite recipes. A keen gardener could develop a planting calendar. Someone who enjoys organising things might design a practical checklist or planner.

And not everything has to become a product for sale.
You might want to create something for your family, contribute to a community project or simply enjoy the satisfaction of making something yourself.
The important thing is to find a starting point that genuinely interests you.

Try This Simple Exercise
Take a piece of paper and write down three things:

  1. Something you enjoy doing.
  2. Something you've learned to do reasonably well.
  3. Something you wish were easier, better or more enjoyable.

Don't spend too long thinking about your answers. They don't have to be unusual or impressive.
Now look at what you've written. Could one of those interests, skills or everyday frustrations become the starting point for a creative project?
You don't need to decide what to make just yet. For now, you're simply discovering possibilities.

Explorer Activity 1: Finding Your Creative Starting Point
Welcome to your first Explorer activity!
In our public article, Discover Your Creative Starting Point, we suggested looking at three things: what you enjoy, what you've learned to do and what you wish could be improved. Now we're going to take that idea a little further. You may already have something you'd like to create. Perhaps you've been thinking about it for ages but haven't quite worked out where to begin. Or you might be starting with absolutely no idea at all. Either way, you're in the right place. The purpose of this activity isn't to decide what your next great creation will be. It's to help you recognise interests, abilities and experiences that could provide a starting point. And you might discover a few things about yourself along the way.
